Michigan legislation to ban the open and unlicensed carry of guns from polling locations passed the state Senate today

The bill package would apply to voting places… and absentee ballot processing and counting locations.

Democratic Senator Jeremy Moss says the legislation tries to help voters and election workers feel safer.

“This is about somebody who is taking a firearm, demonstrating that they have it, showing it and it adds one layer of intimidation.”

But Republican Senator Ruth Johnson says the package could get people not trying to break the law in trouble.

“These bills would serve to restrict the rights of law abiding citizens in our state.”

Current state law only bans guns from polling locations in buildings where guns are already banned—like schools and places of worship.
