“I’m excited, appreciative of this tremendous opportunity to serve our veterans.”
New Ottawa County Director of Veterans Affairs Jason Schenkel is himself an army veteran.
“23 years in the army. ive seen a lot done a lot. I’ve worn the shoes worn the boots and I’m excited to be able to take that experience to our constituents who are veterans and their families and help them.”
And to help him succeed the county is increasing the Department of Veterans Affairs budget from $64,000 to $288,000.
“I look forward to digging in and determining the needs of our veterans.”
The 4 person team previously under contract to provide veterans services in the county resigned when the new director was hired to give him, in their words, a clean slate.
“Our current team has done phenomenal work.”
The county currently helps veterans with a burial allowance, financial emergencies and transportation to medical appointments. Administrators say they want to grow the department.
“You won’t find anyone more passionate about those who served. I’m just thankful for the opportunity and ready to get to work.”
