Out of 11 applicants to fill a vacancy on the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners, there are now 5 finalists

There is a vacancy on the Ottawa County Board after Commissioner Kyle Terpstra resigned because of what he called significant changes in his life. Here is what Commissioner Jacob Bonnema knows about it.

“The Terpstras are celebrating. They are adding to their family so we wish Kyle all the best as he is going to be a daddy again, number 3.”

The commissioners narrowed the list of applicants for the vacancy to 5. Joseph McCarter with the most support, 8 votes to advance for an interview. In January a conservative majority took control of the board, and in his application McCarter praised the commissioners for delivering on what they promised when they were elected in 2022. Board chair Joe Moss says all of the candidates have appeal.

“I had a lot of great conversations with the applicants really interesting to hear the varied backgrounds that was so far my favorite part of this process.”

The candidate selected will serve until December 31st 2024, the remainder of Terpstra’s term.

“We really look forward to the interviews. We are going to do them in public on Friday.”
