GRPD launches online portal for the 100 people who witnessed a murder

Frustrated at people's willingness to talk to police, the new tip line will allow witnesses to upload videos of the shooting

The Grand Rapids Police Department Thursday announced a new online tip portal as officials say, law enforcement is growing increasingly frustrated at the lack of community help in solving a recent homicide. Police say over 100 people witnessed a murder, but because of either a fear of retribution or a lack of trust in the GRPD from some community members, few have come forward to say what they saw on August 22nd.

That is when 27-old-Lamount Deshawn Neloson, was brazenly shot and killed as scores of people looked on.

The GRPD said Thursday there is an old saying on the street—that “snitches get stiches,” meaning, if you rat out someone to police, you could be next. So in an effort to help alleviate some of that fear, the department announced a new online tip portal where anyone can anonymously upload photos of videos from the night of the shooting.

The portal will be open for seven days. Police believe with that many witnesses, and seemingly everyone having a smart phone these days equipped with a video camera—someone out there captured the murder on tape, and it could help investigators solve the case.
