A western Michigan man -- wearing a vial containing ashes from his girlfriend's cremation -- has been sentenced for a crash that killed her and the woman's unborn child.

The Muskegon Chronicle reports that the vial was hanging from Donovan Wilson's neck when he appeared Monday in Muskegon County Circuit Court.

Defense attorney Jeffrey West said his client's "grief is great" in the deaths of 21-year-old Nikki Bart and the child.

Bart was in her third trimester when the car they were in ran a stop sign Dec. 30, 2015 and struck another vehicle.

Wilson was driving and pleaded no contest in June to operating under the influence of a controlled substance and marijuana possession.

He was sentenced to six months in jail and three years' probation.
