This week when Muskegon Heights voters scanned their ballots, they may have noticed the candidate names for Muskegon Heights Public School Board were missing. The district was relying on write-in votes.
Ultimately, voters elected Calvin Matthews, Anderson Robinson, Joe Rone and Christopher Thomas to serve 4-year terms. Mark Glover was elected to fill a partial term ending in December 2028.
Five of seven board seats were open after four current members did not seek reelection at the end of their terms this year.
Less than 400 votes were cast, compared with thousands in 2024.
The seven-member board manages the district’s legacy debt, while the Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System, a partner charter school, enrolls students.
The charter runs the only public schools operating in Muskegon Heights. According to the state, more than 90% of the district’s students are considered economically disadvantaged.
