The Muskegon City Commission approved the $28.4 million project renovating and improving the Public Service Building in the 1300 block of East Keating Avenue.
“It includes pretty much everything, taking it down to the concrete and the steel, and we’re going to move departments around. We’re going to give everyone modern workspaces and crew spaces, dispatch areas. We’re expanding the office and administration area with more conference spaces.”
Dan VanderHeide is Muskegon’s Public Works Director. He says the building has remained mostly unchanged since it was built in 1971.
“It was built at that time to be exactly what the department needed. Obviously, 55 years later, things have changed a bit, so we appreciate the building and we’re keeping the guts of it and we’re keeping some mementos, but 55 years later most of it is going to look quite different.”
The project also includes $10.3 million for new water meters throughout the city and $5.9 million for capital improvements at other city facilities.
Funding comes from savings being captured from those improvements as well as a tax-exempt lease purchase with Capital One Public Funding. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
