“I must have a superintendent that aligns with the concepts of transparency, accountability, and follow-through.”
Alyn Eastin is a consultant for Ray & Associates, the firm assisting Grand Rapids Public Schools’ superintendent search after Dr. Leadrianne Roby announced her departure in February. Dozens of attendees asked questions read aloud by Eastin.
“We have had years of problems at the highest level of the district and many problems shoved under the rug rather than being solved in a way that allows clarity to the community and parents about how and why decisions are made.”
Eastin asked attendees what characteristics a new superintendent should exemplify.
“I want to see someone dedicated to performing at their highest level and willing to stay in the position. It seems like this job is a revolving door. This is probably one of the biggest districts in the most vibrant city in the state.”
Others proposed looking outside the city for a candidate.
“I would encourage the board to look for candidates outside of Grand Rapids who are not ingrained in the city politics and historical roots of many current issues.”
The district plans on selecting a new superintendent by the end of October.
