Outgoing U.S. Senator Gary Peters of Michigan has made an endorsement in the race for his replacement.
Peters is backing fellow centrist democrat Congresswoman Haley Stevens. Her opponent, the more progressive Abdul El-Sayed, has been leading in recent polls.
The Michigan Republican Party said that Peters deciding to back Stevens after he said he would stay out of it means establishment Democrats are “panicked” about El-Sayed winning.
Peters said that wasn’t the case:
“Well, I think the fact that the Republicans said that tell you how much they want the other candidate to win. That should be very telling when Republicans are making that comment.”
El-Sayed picked up the endorsement of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota Monday. Last week another member of “The Squad,” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, backed El-Sayed.
