The Michigan Strategic Fund Board approved a tax break for Muskegon-based La Colombe Coffee Roasters’ expansion. Historically, it’s the county’s largest economic development and it’s creating hundreds of jobs and providing a boost to area dairy farmers

The Michigan Strategic Fund Board unanimously approved a 30-year renaissance zone designation for La Colombe Coffee Roasters, a subsidiary of Chobani. The tax break will benefit the $567 million expansion of its Norton Shores facility.

Renaissance zones are intended to incentivize development by exempting the majority of state and local taxes for qualifying businesses. Beginning January 1st, the Norton Shores renaissance zone will be established for the next 30 years.

La Colombe is adding over 200,000 square feet of production space to the current facility, creating 337 new jobs while retaining 312 existing jobs, allowing the facility to operate 24/7.

The maker of ready-to-drink lattes and cold brew coffees is expanding to meet increasing demand, which has resulted in a 32% spike in sales. The plant currently uses 30 million pounds of Michigan milk annually. The expansion will increase that amount to 615 million pounds per year.

The expansion is expected to be completed by December 2031.
