Authorities are continuing to investigate the death of a man after a tree fell during a thunderstorm

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office says it’s investigating an incident that happened Monday evening after a tree fell during a passing thunderstorm.

Just after 5 pm yesterday evening, deputies and medical responders were sent to an address near Crinnion Ave NE and 16 Mile Rd NE for a report that a tree had fallen on a person.

When first responders arrived, they located a 39-year-old Solon Township man who had been struck by the falling tree. Despite immediate response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say the man was outside with friends when strong winds from a thunderstorm moved through the area, causing multiple trees nearby to fall.

They say the man warned them to move just before the tree came down, actions they believe likely prevented more of them from being struck.

The incident remains under investigation.
