Kent County officials are keeping a close eye on the Grand River basin around Grand Rapids as this week’s heavy rain is causing floodwaters to rise quickly.
The Grand River is now expected to crest at approximately 19 feet Monday afternoon, less of a danger than the 23 feet predicted previously, says city Emergency Manager Benjamin Rance.
He notes that engineering teams are actively patrolling the flood walls to ensure structural integrity.
“We know that there are projects happening all along the river, specifically, the ones that were happening at the public museum. We also have the amphitheater that we're continuing to work on and we're really close to the river's edge right over there. But really, given our current forecast of cresting at only 19 feet, and with the gradual rise that we're seeing over the next two or three days. We don't have too many concerns.”
The river level is expected to sustain at 19 feet for several days before beginning a slow recession Wednesday morning.
