Lieutenant Ashley Miller is a public information officer with the Michigan State Police. She says people need to prepare to hunker down and wait this storm out.

"We need to make sure that our plow trucks have enough room to maintain the roads as best they can. And truly, once the freezing rain starts the roads are not going to be safe."

The National Weather Service has issued an ice storm warning for most of northern Lower Michigan.

Ice projections from the Weather Service show ice accumulations aren't as severe as last year's historic storm but could change. Farther north, blizzard warnings are posted, and some snowfall records could be broken.

Governor Whitmer has activated the state's Emergency Operations Center and is prepared to deploy resources to respond to the storm.
