The school board voted to renew the contracts against the recommendation of the superintendent

“Moving into the non-renewal resolution for employee two.”

After a pair of 5 to 4 votes president Jose Rodriguez says the Grand Rapids board of education is renewing the contracts of Deputy Superintendent Brandy Lovelady Mitchell and chief area instructional leader Bridget Cheney.

“I just want folks to be clear, they are renewed for another year.”

Both Cheney and Lovelady Mitchell, who between them earn over 400 thousand dollars a year, are on paid administrative leave.Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby asked the board not to renew their contracts. Trustees Kimberly Williams and Richard Williamson voted against renewal.

“I am basing my decision on the recommendation of our superintendent.”

“Concluded we do need to go in a different direction with different staff, different leadership.”

But the majority of the board voted to renew the two contracts.Trustee Sara Melton says she voted to renew because she objected to the evaluation process.

“Was the process in place that I would want any one of us to have if there was a complaint if there was a complaint against any of us and for me the process is not in place yet.”
