At his funeral Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church Pastor Darryl Caddy Sr. told mourners the death of Da’Quain Johnson was the result of.”
“Police violence, Excessive force.”
“Da’Quain Johnson, better known as DQ, departed this life unexpectedly on February 18th.”
31-year-old Johnson was riding a bicycle on February 18th when Grand Rapids police in squad cars started chasing him. They say they thought he had a gun. When Johnson jumped off the bike and tried to run the officers unleased a police dog to knock him down and as they tried to take him into custody, say he pointed a handgun.
“A handgun was recovered at the scene.”
Former police Chief Eric Winstrom says one of the officers shot Johnson three times.
“Moments after that shooting, the shooting officer saying I saw the barrel pointed right at me.”
There are police body and dash cam recordings of the incident. Kent County prosecutor Chris Becker released a statement saying he is reviewing the case but says the investigation is not finished.
“We need to speak up and not shut up, we need to stand up and not sit down. Declare that we demand justice and equity.”
