“He’s got a gun in his hand. Drop the gun.”
The day after a Grand Rapids police officer shot and killed 31-year-old Da’Quain Johnson, police chief Eric Winstrom provided 3 body and in car video clips of the incident.
“To get some accurate information out.”
And during a city public safety committee meeting, member Andrew Feikema wanted to know when the chief will release more video.
“The body worn camera footage from the second officer directly at the scene? The short answer, the GRPD will not release anything else.”
The chief says the investigation is now in the hands of the state police and they control the evidence. Angelica Johnson, the man’s mother, says she can’t even see the police videos.
“Its going on a week now. I don’t know how he died. I cannot get footage. you all get to release what you want to. That’s not fair.”
DaQuain Johnson was on a bicycle when police started chasing him last Wednesday, suspecting he was carrying a gun. When he jumped off the bike the police dog they unleashed knocked him down. Then he was shot when officers say he pulled a handgun. But some eyewitnesses have cell phone video they say disputes the need for deadly force.
“I think there are still a lot of questions community members have been left with.”
“There is a ton of videos to go through we released what I think is the clearest.”
