The state House could vote tomorrow Tuesday on a bill that would require the Legislature to formally approve changes to Michigan’s guidance on how local school districts can meet state standards
A Republican-sponsored bill on the House agenda would require formal legislative approval of the recommendations by the state board of education.
Right now, the elected board adopts guidance to school districts on what students at different grade levels are expected to know in various subject areas.
That guidance helps local school districts adopt their own curricula and choose textbooks and other learning materials to meet those goals.
Democrats opposed the bill in committee, arguing it infuses more politics into what should be nonpartisan decisions.
Republicans say the bill ensures the Legislature has the final say over academic guidance to local schools.
