Lansing School District, Detroit Public Schools Community District and Godfrey-Lee Public Schools in Wyoming received separate letters from the U.S. Department of Justice Wednesday.
In each letter, the DOJ requested copies of all school materials referencing sexual orientation, gender identity and other related terms.
The letters warn that references to these topics in classes students cannot opt out of, such as health classes, violates parental rights in education.
Michigan House Representative John Fitzgerald of Wyoming says he isn't sure why the three districts were chosen.
“Understandably we see east, central and west. We see a small, medium and large option. But for Godfrey-Lee to be singled out in this case, I don’t understand exactly how that district rose to the level of awareness for this type of case.”
Fitzgerald says the three districts aren’t teaching anything different from other Michigan school districts.
