Four candidates for governor participated in an Education Forum at MEA’s Winter Conference on Feb. 6 in Detroit

Proposals included putting all of the state’s education dollars toward K-through-12 schools, more in-school support services, and focusing more on career education

Some of the candidates for Michigan governor discussed their education policy goals with members of the Michigan Education Association on Friday.

The group included two Democratic, one independent, and one Republican candidate.

Former Attorney General Mike Cox, the lone Republican candidate, agreed with the others on needing to provide teachers with more support from counselors and other staff.

But Cox disagreed when it came to providing free school meals to everyone or spending more on education.

“If money solved everything, we’d be number one in the country, but it doesn’t. I’m all for, I’m not going to reduce one dollar that goes to the School Aid Fund. But we want accountability. Parents, grandparents, and taxpayers should get accountability.”

Democrats, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genessee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, as well as Independent former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan also participated in the forum.
