A deal could be coming in a lawsuit over nearly $650 million in canceled state spending

A state court in Lansing was supposed to hear oral arguments in the case Friday

The issue started in December when the Republican-led House Appropriations Committee, by itself, canceled around $650 million in what it said was unspent money for a previous state budget.

The state Attorney General called that move unconstitutional, prompting the House of Representatives to sue the state to block that money from being spent.

Now, the judge in the case says it’s possible both sides are "interested in initiating some discussions towards a resolution of this matter.”

He’s giving them two weeks to work something out.

Estimates over how much money is actually subject to cancellation have varied.

In a court filing, the state budget director put that number at around $350 million.
