Republican Senator Ted Cruz introduced the ROTOR act in June months after a deadly crash between an Army Blackhawk Helicopter and American Airlines passenger jet in Washington, DC.
The legislation would require aircraft to use a safety system that transmits their location. The Senate approved it unanimously in December, but it narrowly failed this week in the House.
In an email statement, Huizenga said the ROTOR Act could “erode national security.” He added, “I’m upset it does not do enough to improve safety in response to the tragic yet avoidable Jan 2025 DCA crash”.
Instead, Huizenga says he will support a bill known as the ALERT Act.
