“I know this may not be satisfactory to some who would like to just create a scene and be disruptive, but we know this is extremely effective for reaching people.”
According to Congressman Bill Huizenga, thousands attended his two telephone townhalls. Topics ranged from social security and Medicaid to the war in Ukraine and immigration. Attendees overwhelmingly spoke out against Medicaid cuts, which the Zeeland Republican stated would not be touched in the House Republican’s budget proposal.
“There hasn’t been a vote, there hasn’t been a cut, there hasn’t been an EO. There is nothing that would indicate that there is going to be anything that is going to be touching anyone’s benefits at this.”
However, the Congressional Budget Office which analyzes the budget process concluded Republicans will struggle to meet their budget goal without cuts to Medicare or Medicaid.
Huizenga also addressed concerns about the war in Ukraine, breaking from President Trump who has stated that Ukraine was the aggressor in its war with Russia.
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, I believe, is illegal, it should never have happened and was a huge problem.”
Huizenga has previously hosted telephone townhalls and says he will have more in the future.
