The Grand Rapids Police Department has released its latest crime statistics indicating an overall downward trend

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom recently shared the department’s crime statistics with the city’s Public Safety Commission.

Crime data from January through July of this year reveals seven fatal shootings and 27 non-fatal.

“We have lost seven, including August 10th, was our most recent murder. That investigation very much active.”

That was before 2:30 Tuesday morning, when an adult male was found shot to death in the 400 block of Diamond Avenue Southeast, marking the eighth homicide in the city.

Winstrom noted that GRPD has arrested individuals in six of the eight homicide cases this year, maintaining a clearance rate above the national average of 55%.

“Detectives working extremely diligently to keep those numbers up. We ant to get as many answers as we can for the loved ones of these individuals who have been killed.”

Winstrom also noted the department has recovered 287 illegally possessed guns so far this year, which averages just over a gun a day.
