State officials will test Fennville drinking water after PFAS discovery; a second site has been identified in Ottawa County

The former Fennville City Dump on 54th Street in Allegan County north of M-89 was used as a 22-acre landfill from the 1950’s through the early 1980's.

In 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency tested four temporary monitoring wells, one of which showed PFAS levels above safe drinking water criteria.

Groundwater flows towards Mann Creek, northwest toward the Kalamazoo River watershed.

Officials are developing a plan to sample residential drinking water wells this year, notifying affected homeowners by mail.

Ottawa County’s Sanico North Landfill on 144th Avenue in Nunica operated from the mid-1960's through the mid-1990's, accepting residential, commercial, agricultural and industrial waste.

In August 2025, the state received a Baseline Environmental Assessment including high PFAS compounds detected.

A BEA is a document allowing a person to buy or operate at a site without being held liable for existing contamination.

Groundwater flows toward Lloyds Bayou to the west- northwest about 900 feet away.

Officials determined there are no nearby drinking water wells in need of sampling.
