After serving less than one term, Grand Rapids city commissioner Drew Robbins is resigning to run for the Michigan House of Representatives

“I wanted to share a bit of a personal announcement. Our next city commission meeting will be my last.”

At their meeting this week Grand Rapids city commissioner Drew Robbins announced he resigning to run for democrat Carol Glanville’s 84th district seat in the state house of representatives. It will be vacant because she is running for the state senate.

“It is my intent to submit the necessary filing paperwork. That does require that I have to resign from my current capacity as city commissioner, which is very bittersweet for me.”

Robbins was elected to serve as a first ward city commissioner in 2022. He worked with interim city attorney Philip Strom on the public safety committee.

“You have been a pleasure to work with and thanks for your diligence and always being prepared and asking good questions along the way.”

It is the city commission’s job to appoint someone to fill the remainder of Robbins term, which expires December 31st.

“Which I hope will give ample time on a transition plan that leaves the city and the commission in the best place possible which is my number one priority. Without getting too misty eyed, I appreciate you all.”
