The 9,000-acre network of protected public lands, parks and an 85-mile trail system will link Grand Rapids to Grand Haven

The next Grand River Greenway expansion in Kent County includes a series of new projects for 2026.

It will encompass nine miles of new trails, a pedestrian tunnel under Northland Drive and bridges at Knapp Street and Rogue River Drive.

“Real excited that the rubber is going to start meeting the road and we'll have some trail projects underway this year.”

Ben Swayze, Parks Director for the Kent County Parks Department, shares details of the Pettis Trail portion set to begin this spring, running from Cannonsburg Road to Knapp Street.

“It's about 3.5 miles of trail and it's a pretty difficult project. If you've driven through that section, it's a very narrow section of road. There's lots of hills, lots of curves, and that project is going to affect those residents that are along that stretch.”

The Kent County Parks Department is holding two open houses Thursday, January 29: the first at Roselle Park in Ada Township from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m; the second is at Cannon Township Hall from 5:30p.m. to 7 p.m.
