Late last year, state officials clawed back subsidies for a $2.4 billion EV battery plant near Big Rapids.
Construction was stalled by a lawsuit between a small mid-Michigan town and the Chinese tech company building the plant.
Now, Gotion Hi-Tech is seeking fiscal damages from Green Charter Township
"In a federal court filing, Gotion says the township's opposition to the plant killed it.
They say the township broke a contract and should now pay damages because the plant is dead.
For years, locals opposed the plant because of Gotion's public ties to the Chinese Communist Party.
Jason Kruse is the township supervisor. He says the suit has been costly, and they're working on a path forward.
"In order to make sure that the township doesn't enter into massive financial trouble."
Green Charter's lawyers argue the case should be dismissed.
Gotion's legal team have not yet responded to a request for comment.
