Concerns about crowd control led officials in Mecosta County to move a discussion about the future of an electric vehicle battery plant online last night

Green Charter Township supervisor Jim Chapman says the goal of the meeting was to not only lay out the facts of the project, but also dispel rumors about the company’s affiliation with the Chinese Communist Party.

The proposed two-billion-dollar plant would be run by Gotion. It’s a multi-national company based in China specializing in clean energy products.

Chuck Thelen is a Michigan-based vice president at Gotion. He says the rumors about ties to the Chinese Communist Party are being used to cause panic.

“Despite what any current politician might say, there is no communist plot within Gotion to make Big Rapids a center to spread communism.”

Former Michigan Republican candidate for Governor Tudor Dixon recently spoke out against the facility. Michigan Congressman John Moolenaar, a Republican who represents Mecosta County, recently asked federal agencies to determine if the plant poses a security risk.
