The City of Lowell and Lowell Charter Township are considering rezoning a business park to allow for a potential data center

The Covenant Business Park is currently zoned for light industrial and commercial use.

Its designation would require rezoning to permit a data center.

There is high demand nationwide for secured facilities housing computer systems and servers that store, process and distribute digital information for the internet, cloud computing and online services.

Due to on-going negotiations, property developer Franklin Partners has not released the name of the prospective tenant but confirmed it is an American-owned company.

Both the city and Lowell Township are stakeholders in the business park located at the I-96 & Alden Nash interchange.

Leaders note the community could benefit from significant property and utility tax income for schools and public services.

Total investment could be $500 million to $1 billion, generating up to 2,000 short-term construction jobs and 250-400 long-term, permanent jobs.

Local officials, representatives from Consumers Energy, The Right Place and property developer Franklin Partners held the first open houses and public hearings this week, addressing residents’ concerns about water usage, environmental impacts, traffic and safety.

Local government leaders are in the early stages of gathering public input.

The Township Planning Commission will consider rezoning December 8th before a Township Board vote December 15th.
