A proposal for a data center in Kalkaska County is off the table after many residents spoke out against the idea at public forums this week. The man leading the project says anonymous threats also contributed to his decision

Matt Rine runs a carbon capture company. He wanted to build a data center that would have net-zero carbon emissions.

He began by seeking public feedback, telling Interlochen Public Radio he hoped to avoid a situation like the one playing out in Saline Township, where residents are fighting a project that’s already far along.

He wanted buy-in from the community.

But many residents expressed concerns about the technology he wanted to use, and the use of public land. Some said any data center in Kalkaska, no matter what it looked like, was a bad idea.

In a statement, Rine said he appreciated the feedback, but that some were delivered anonymously and in ways that were personally distressing to him and his family and expressed dismay that that halted the conversation.
