Ice rink preliminary designs as presented at the Community Open House on May 2, 2022

No drinking is permitted on the ice, but visitors to the new Window on the Waterfront skating park in Holland will soon be allowed to bring an alcoholic beverage into the plaza around the rink

 “You are asking for trouble.”

Lindell Herrick is one of the residents who told city council she is against allowing alcohol at the Window on the Waterfront Ice Park.

Martha Capestany is also opposed

“The slippery surface of an ice rink requires a high level of focus and stability that is compromised by intoxication.”

But in a 6 to one vote, council agreed to extend the city social district into the ice park.  Council member Kim Rowan does not think it violates community standards.

“Having a beer while you are at the ice rink, I don’t think that is contrary to family values.”

When the extension takes effect in 21 days, visitors will be able to buy an alcoholic beverage in a to go cup at one of 19 businesses and take it into the plaza around the ice rink. And assistant city manager Matt VanDyken says then putting on skates is not advised.

“We would strongly encourage that people don’t consume alcohol before they skate.”

Mayor Nathan Bocks says they have not had issues anywhere else in the city’s social district and if there are problems at the ice park:

“We have the ability to pull this back if there is an issue.”
