Federal reopening allows Park Township to advance $1.4 Million Holland Coast Guard station purchase

Ottawa County’s Park Township leaders want to purchase the decommissioned Holland Coast Guard station, and those plans can move forward with the reopening of the federal government

“I expect within the next 10 days to receive the revised offer of purchase, as the paperwork is called.”

Interim Park Township Manager Bill Cousins says the state budgeted $600,000 to purchase the former Coast Guard station on Lake Macatawa.

“So, I’m expecting that we will take ownership of the building by the end of January of next year.”

The total purchase price is $1.4 million. Money from the American Rescue Plan Act will make up the difference.

The station closed in 2022 when operations were consolidated in Grand Haven. The new facility will be converted and house the fire department marine division, serving as a base for its water rescue operations. Cousins says the township has already been using two wave runners for rescue efforts.

“In fact, I think we’ve had maybe over a dozen trips made already this summer and fall to take care of people that are having problems out on the lake.”

The location offers a 5-minute emergency response time to Holland State Park.
