“This year we’re going to announce the “Military Promise.”
Grand Valley State University President Philomena Mantella made the announcement during GVSU’s Veterans Day Luncheon.
The program guarantees admission to all military members who have committed to serve, are serving or have honorably served, and now includes a scholarship.
“Those students will have an admissions slot at Grand Valley State University, and they will have a $500 scholarship per semester while they are attending at Grand Valley State University.”
The luncheon’s keynote speaker, Ingrid Tighe is a former U. S. Army Signal Corps officer.
Tighe shared lessons she learned in the military, and how that translates to civilian life, such as the mandate to prepare relentlessly.
“For an exam, you have to study, practice taking the test. When you’re going into a meeting, practice your speech. Little things like that. It seems so simple but preparing ahead of time will help you succeed in times of uncertainty.”
Tighe also joined other veterans on a panel to discuss challenges to life after the military, emphasizing the value of leadership skills.
“Bottom line is people first. No matter where you are, if you take care of your people, they’ll take care of you.”
