Physicians coming to Grand Rapids for their residency will soon have a new housing option through Corewell Health with the goal of paving the way for a potential on-going career in West Michigan

A new 118-unit housing complex will be constructed on Ottawa Avenue near Corewell’s Grand Rapids’ medical campus, addressing the affordable housing shortage for resident and fellow physicians.

Corewell Health West President Josh Kooistra says once medical residents learn where they’ll train, they have a short time to find housing, often with families in tow.

The new living center will be a tool to attract talent to West Michigan.

“I think this will be a game changer for students who want to try to match into our programs to really be able to find affordable housing that’s close to the hospital and take the hassle away from them while they’re going to graduate medical school and succeed to the next step of their career.”

The Karl and Patricia Betz Resident Physician Living Center is named for the lead donors, who have been supporting community hospitals in Grand Rapids for nearly 30 years, says Kelly Dyer, Foundation president for Corewell Health West and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.

“This project in part spoke to their hearts because of its impact on bringing the best and brightest to West Michigan.”

The Corewell Health Karl and Patricia Betz Resident Physician Living Center is expected to open in June 2027.
