Prosecutors released the 9-1-1 calls and police body camera video of a home invasion on Lemyra Street SE in Wyoming on September 16.
““Kent County 911, what’s your emergency?”
The Sheriff’s Office investigation shows at 1AM, Luis Sandoval broke through the door of the home where his estranged wife was living, and began searching for her, gun in hand, threatening family members.
Over a 9-1-1 call, emergency dispatchers heard shots fired.
Wyoming police officers arrived shortly after.
“He’s shooting, he’s shooting! Everyone take cover, get down.“
Officers say Sandoval partially hid behind a wall, pointing the gun at them and at fleeing family members.
Both officers fired and Sandoval was wounded twice.
Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker.
“He didn’t actually fire at officers but that is not required by law. They just have to have a reasonable belief that they’re in danger of death or great bodily harm, they themselves or the civilians as you see them running out of the house at the same time you hear, 'Gun, gun, gun!' and they fired those shots.”
The medical examiner later determined neither of the injuries was fatal and that Sandoval died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
There were 12 people in the house at the time of the incident including several children.
No one else was injured.
Becker says the officers were justified in their actions.
“They had reasonable cause. When you’re looking at self-defense, defense of others, both apply here.”
