Community honors domestic violence victims in memorial vigil

Monday in Grand Rapids, a vigil focused on ending domestic violence remembers lives lost, honors survivors and raises awareness

The theme of this year’s vigil is “Their Light Lives On.”

“A lot of times domestic violence happens in the shadows. It could be happening to members of our own families, and we don't even realize it and so we want to share a light on this problem that affects all of us,

Micah Johnston is the Director of DVAN, the Domestic Violence Action Network of Kent County.

He says the event brings together survivors, families, and advocates with a message of support and offers of help from local agencies.

“A lot of times people who are in domestic violence situations, and even when they leave them, part of the tactics of those who abuse is isolation and so this vigil is a tremendous opportunity to let people know they’re not alone.”

Leaders say approximately 60 Michiganders have lost their lives to domestic violence this year.

Their names are on a memorial art installation displayed on the Blue Bridge in downtown
Grand Rapids through Friday.

“We invite you to come throughout the week and just spend some time reflecting on lives that have been lost and what you might be able to do to like help our heal community and help end domestic violence.”

The Domestic Violence Memorial Vigil is scheduled for 6PM Monday at Grand Valley State University’s Eberhard Center in Grand Rapids.
