Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer gives a policy speech at an event on Wednesday, April 9, 2025

The governor says she’s glad to see a deal on road funding, and that free school meals will continue for all students

Governor Gretchen Whitmer says her team will spend the next few days reviewing lengthy budget bills in time for her to sign them next week. That’s after the Legislature met through the night and into Friday morning to finalize the bills and send them to her desk.

Whitmer says the process was contentious and messy, but she’s pleased schools will see a funding boost and free meals for all students will continue. Republicans also won some of their priorities.

“Everyone made concessions, but everyone can point to good things that they were able to get accomplished here.”

Whitmer says she understands why school officials are upset at having to wait so long for a K-through-12 budget, but she hopes they’ll pleased with the results.

Whitmer says the most important thing is she and a sharply divided Legislature were able to bridge their differences to keep state government from shutting down.
