JR Automation, a subsidiary of Hitachi, received approval for a $1.6 million Michigan Business Development Program grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund board.
The grant will offset a “cost disadvantage” after JR Automation opted to build its new headquarters in Zeeland, even though building in Greenville, South Carolina, would have required a lower capital investment. The grant also supports the creation of 150 jobs.
The company’s six leased facilities are currently headquartered in Holland Township. It broke ground last month on its Zeeland headquarters after Governor Gretchen Whitmer visited Hitachi in Japan as part of a broader investment mission.
The $72.8 million facility will sit on 45 acres near the intersection of East Riley Street and 84th Avenue. The 286,000-square-foot building will be dedicated to customer automation demonstration and bring together 350 employees under one roof.
The company will also receive a property tax abatement of roughly $9.5 million and a State Education Tax Abatement of nearly $2.3 million.
