“I see this as a game changer for the medical examiner’s office.”

Administrator Al Vanderberg says the partnership with Michigan State University provides the county with a state mandated service.

And offers M-S-U medical students an opportunity to watch and learn.

“Expands the classroom directly into the medical examiner’s office creating a unique training ground for the next generation of forensic pathologists

Dr. Steven Cohle will still be the county medical examiner; he becomes an employee of MSU.

“MSU will provide Kent County with the services of chief medical examiner Steven Cohle.”

Michigan Pathology Associates had been the county’s medical examiner partner, but they are ending forensic pathology services, leading to the partnership with MSU.

“Two-way benefit for the medical school and Kent County.”

All county board members support the new arrangement. Commissioner Stan Ponstein:

“Win, win for both sides. I want to thank Michigan State University for stepping forward. It’s a great opportunity for their students.
