The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service is inviting public comment on a proposed environmental assessment that will significantly reshape the Grand River through downtown Grand Rapids.
The river restoration will improve public safety, enhance aquatic habitat for native Great Lakes fish and mussel species, and increase public access and recreational use of the river.
The city is seeking $11 million from the USDA through its Small Watershed Program to help fund the Lower Grand River Habitat Restoration Project. However, before the agency can consider funding the project, an environmental impact assessment is required.
Public comment is open until October 15th. The restoration plan and comment submission instructions are available here.
