A laid-off U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employee says that when the Department of Government Efficiency or DOGE questioned government "credit card" use, the General Services Administration set a $1 limit for government employees and contractors until transactions are reviewed and approved.
For members of the sea lamprey control team, there’s no money available to pay for gas powering boats and travelling the state to do their job.
One project that could be affected is the Grand River restoration through downtown Grand Rapids. Nonprofit Grand Rapids Whitewater oversees the project.
A joint response from city and GWW leaders stated:
“The upper reach portion of the river project, which will involve the removal of the 6th street dam and construction of a sea lamprey barrier, is in the planning phase and it is too early to say what impacts, if any, federal action may have on that work. Both phases do rely on federal funding, and we are closely monitoring the ongoing conversations nationally but have not been made aware of any changes at this time.”
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service did not respond to the rapids project specifically but sent a general statement reading:
“The Department of the Interior is working with GSA and ensuring that purchases in support of mission-critical activities continue in a timely manner.”
