“Man, just look around. Look at this beautiful field, man. Ya’ll can give it up for that. Give it up for that. Give it up for that.”
Union High School Senior Nathan Mayfield is just one of thousands of Grand Rapids Public School students utilizing the 102-year-old Houseman Field each year.
“Every game, every meet, every graduation ceremony here will remind us of the hard work and support that went into making this possible. On behalf of us all who get to call this our home field, thank you for believing in us.”
The $5.1 million renovation of historic Houseman Field was completed this summer on time and under budget. Upgrades include new playing turf and running track, expanded parking, energy-efficient LED field lighting, locker room acoustical improvements and masonry restoration.
State Representative Kristian Grant, a former GRPS athlete, alum and school board member, says Houseman is more than just a field.
“What’s happening here is not just about a physical improvement for a space. It is about the future of our students, the values of teamwork, discipline and community.”
Improvements were made possible by a $305 million bond approved by voters in November 2023.
