Muskegon area residents have a lot of questions about the latest proposal that could transform Muskegon waterfront but would eliminate a popular campground

At Monday’s work session, City Manager Jonathan Seyferth outlined a plan that would lease the city-owned campground at Fisherman’s Landing to West Michigan Dock, or Mart Dock.

It would take over campground operations until securing funds and permits to redevelop the campground as a port.

In exchange, the city would acquire 2.5 acres of Mart Dock’s property along the lakeshore to develop as a public green space with a walkway and dock for cruise ships.

The city and Mart Dock would buy additional property around Fisherman’s Landing from Verplank Dock Co. with the city utilizing 25 acres along the Muskegon River and lakeshore for park expansion, wetlands and natural habitat.

The city would retain Fisherman’s Landing’s boat launch, fish cleaning station and restrooms, while relocating the pavilion.

With much still to be determined in land swaps, sales, and grant funding, residents are divided over the plans.

Barb Arbor worries about environmental impacts.

“We should be ensured the city will protect our lake. These might be private properties, but it’s our economy. It’s important to our culture, our way of life and our economy.”

Resident Dave Alexander urges support.

“Do you know how long city and community leaders have sought such redevelopment and what that can mean for this community? This agreement will launch a new era of Great Lakes Shipping in the port of Muskegon, creating good-paying jobs “

Commissioners could vote as early as November on rezoning and whether to approve the development agreement.
