The Vibe is a backyard party-type fundraising event put on by the Kentwood Parks and Recreation Department. The city boasts one of the state’s most comprehensive adaptive recreation programs, allowing residents of any ability to participate in recreational activities.
“So, we’ve been at this for nine years, and thanks a lot to this specific fundraiser, we’ve been able to purchase a boat and jet skis, a cycling trailer with a full fleet of cycles.”
Shelby Henshaw is Kentwood’s Facilities Operations Supervisor. She says other adaptable equipment such as kayaks, archery, rock climbing and bowling supplies were purchased thanks to The Vibe.

“It’s really just a fun evening to kind of come together and meet some of our adaptive participants, some city officials, those donating towards the adaptive program, and really we’re all just kind of there to further enhance our adaptive recreation program.”
The event will feature keynote speaker Bill Barkeley, the first deaf-blind runner to complete the Boston Marathon.
The Vibe takes place on Thursday, September 11th from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Kentwood Library Courtyard. Tickets can be purchased here.
