California-based Natron Energy is permanently closing its Holland facility located at 70 W. 48th Street. In its Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN notice filed with the state, the closure will permanently lay off 37 employees.
The sodium-ion battery manufacturer is also closing a Santa Clara, California facility, permanently laying off 58 workers there.
The notice stated the employees did not have the right to displace or bump any other employee, nor would they be recalled. None of the employees are represented by a Union.
The company was unable to provide 60 days’ advance notice of the plant closure. It had been actively seeking both capital and commercial business investment which would have enabled it to postpone the closure or avoid it entirely. Natron’s board of directors deemed those attempts unsuccessful and announced the closure on August 27th.
The notice states employees were notified of the company’s fundraising efforts and what would happen should those efforts fail.
No reason was given for the closure and a phone call to the company was not immediately returned.
