Electric vehicle battery maker LG Energy Solution Tuesday announced a massive expansion in Holland that will add up to 1,200 jobs by 2025.
With its main headquarters in South Korea, LG Energy Solution, manufactures large lithium-ion polymer battery cells and packs for electric vehicles.
And, according to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the $1.7 billion expansion in Holland will quintuple the plant’s ability to produce battery components in the future, and at a time when Michigan’s electric vehicle industry is just beginning to emerge.
Officials say, it is a huge win for Holland and West Michigan, as LG Energy Solution was considering the new facility in the southeastern U.S, Poland or China.
State Rep. Mary Whiteford of Casco Township Tuesday did not downplay the significance of the expansion.
“Holland has waited for years for this,” Whiteford said. “And I am just so proud of the community.”
The company could begin hiring later this year, while the average wage for the 1200 new jobs will be about $65,000 annually, or just over $1,200 per week.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued this state Tuesday,
“The impact of this win will be felt around the entire state for decades to come.”
