Representative Rashida Tlaib wants to stop large stores from abruptly changing prices based on customer’s personal data

Tlaib claims big stores use data to charge different prices for different people, depending on what they look like, their online history, and even current weather conditions.

“The heat wave...they wanna fix the prices and increase the cost of water. Or maybe they know this is a product you have to buy...you buy it every single time. And they’re increasing the cost because they know...hey you got a raise at work.”

Tlaib wants to empower the Federal Trade Commission to enforce a ban on electronic pricing on shelves in large stores and stop what she calls “grossly excessive” increases in the cost of a product.

She also wants to require stores to inform customers when the business is using features like facial recognition technology.
