Bills in the State Senate tackle rental application process

The bills would cap rental application fees, eliminate junk fees after a lease is signed, and seal eviction records

If passed, the bills would cap application fees at 25 dollars and lessen the weight of credit scores in the approval process.

Democratic Senator Rosemary Bayer says the legislation is also looking to expunge and seal eviction records:

“Oftentimes, landlords will use the threat of an eviction. They'll file an eviction knowing that they're not going to go through with the whole process, The problem is that is immediately on your record, and it stays there, even if they never follow through.”

Bayer says the bills also aim to prevent landlords from imposing unreasonable fees after a lease is signed and require a least one payment option that has no fees to use.

The bills are currently waiting to be voted out of committee.
