Spring Lake Township short-term rental restrictions tighten

The Spring Lake Board of Trustees voted to tighten its short-term rental regulations while allowing one neighborhood leeway

The new Spring Lake ordinance removes short-term rentals as permitted use from the R-3 residential cottage zone district. The Ottawa County township has created a smaller six-block overlay district where short-term rentals are permitted.

That new overlay district is commonly known as the Strawberry Point neighborhood representing about 10% of the entire township.

The board voted last December to eliminate short-term rentals from all zoning types except for R-3. Last week, they tightened that zone, eliminating short-term rentals from the Minetta Avenue neighborhood, Benjamin Avenue, Rhoda Street and View Drive. That eliminated 60 single-family homes from being used as STRs. Properties with frontage or addresses on North Lake Avenue were excluded from the overlay.

This now leaves 221 residences that could potentially register as STRs within the amended district. Currently, 22 STRs are registered within Strawberry Point. There are currently 25 registered STRs total in Spring Lake Township.
