The new system gives attorneys and self-representing litigants the ability to submit and serve legal documents 24/7, eliminating the need for in-person courthouse visits.
Judge Kirsten Holz says Kent County’s 63rd District Court joins over 50 courts across the state in adopting MiFILE.
“We are such a large county that we wanted to make sure we were prepared for taking that one. It’s more efficient than having massive paper files and it also allows people who might not be able to drive to the court to be able to file from the comfort of their own home, their phone.”
The court now mandates e-filing for attorneys and self-represented litigants, but not to worry if you’re unsure how to navigate MiFILE.
“So, we have two kiosks set up in our lobby with a scanner and instructions right next to a clerk to be able to help people navigate this. We took those steps knowing there might be a learning curve for some people.”
MiFILE currently only applies to civil cases in Kent County. Criminal and traffic cases will be added in the future.
